A E Herbert Limited can trace its history back to the turn off the 20th Century, when a young Alfred Herbert, traditional stonemason, took over the business of his old employer and started to build up a respected stonemasonry business in Melton Mowbray. The business was inevitability hit by the impact of the Great War but survived to allow Alfred sons to join the company and start the expansion into the business that survives today.

When WWII broke out, the business had to be put on hold while the men in the company went off to fight. When they returned at the end of hostilities the business re opened & with a new advertising campaign trade increased to an extent that they were able to open a second branch in the town.

While the core business remained traditional stonemasonry, with examples of work being seen in churches across Leicestershire, the company began to diversify into the building trade. In 1972 the company opened a DIY shop and began to get involved with new house builds and extensions in the local area.
